Telogen phase, also known as the resting phase, is the third and final stage of the hair growth cycle. During this phase, the hair follicle becomes dormant and the hair shaft detaches from the blood supply. The hair remains in the follicle for approximately two to four months. At the end of the telogen phase, the hair is shed, and a new hair begins to grow from the same follicle, initiating the anagen, or growth, phase. This cycle of growth, transition, and rest is a natural process that occurs in all hair-bearing areas of the body. The duration of the telogen phase can vary depending on factors such as genetics, age, and overall health. It is normal to lose a certain number of hairs each day, as a portion of the hair on any given area is always in the telogen phase. Conditions that disrupt the hair growth cycle, such as stress or hormonal imbalances, can lead to an increased number of hairs entering or prolonging their telogen phase, resulting in noticeable hair thinning or loss. However, the telogen phase itself is a necessary part of healthy hair regeneration.
