Telemetri is the automated collection and remote transmission of measurements from distant or inaccessible sources to a receiving system for monitoring, analysis, and archival purposes. It typically involves sensors that measure physical quantities, a transmitter that encodes data, a communication link, and a receiving/processing system.

Core components include sensors and transducers, data acquisition systems or remote terminal units, a telemetry transmitter, a communication channel (radio, cellular, satellite, fiber), and a ground station or data center for decoding, storage, and analysis. The data may be real-time or near real-time, and often undergo validation, compression, and error correction.

Applications are wide-ranging: in space and aviation for flight and spacecraft data; in automotive and motorsport for vehicle telemetry; in medicine for remote patient monitoring; in industry and utilities for SCADA and remote asset monitoring; in environmental science for weather and ocean data; and in consumer devices such as wearables and smart sensors.

Two-way telemetry adds the ability to send commands back to the remote device (telecommand). Modern trends include wireless IoT telemetry, cloud-based analytics, edge computing, and increasingly standardized protocols. Security, privacy, latency, bandwidth, and regulatory issues related to radio spectrum are ongoing considerations.
