Tehtäväjärjestys, also known as the order of operations, is a set of rules used in mathematics to establish a consistent order for performing calculations in an expression. This ensures that expressions have a unique and unambiguous meaning. The standard convention is often remembered by mnemonics such as PEMDAS, BODMAS, or BIDMAS.

PEMDAS stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). BODMAS stands for Brackets, Orders (powers and roots), Division and Multiplication (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right). BIDMAS is similar, with "I" standing for Indices.

Following these rules, operations within parentheses or brackets are performed first. Next, exponents or orders are calculated. Then, multiplication and division are carried out in the order they appear from left to right. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed from left to right.

For example, in the expression 2 + 3 * 4, multiplication is performed before addition, so the result is 2 + 12 = 14. If parentheses were used, as in (2 + 3) * 4, the addition inside the parentheses would be performed first, resulting in 5 * 4 = 20. Adhering to the tehtäväjärjestys is crucial for accurate mathematical problem-solving.
