Tehonkäyttötilat refers to power usage effectiveness (PUE) in Finnish. PUE is a metric used to measure the energy efficiency of a data center. It is calculated by dividing the total amount of energy consumed by a data center by the energy delivered to the IT equipment within that data center. A PUE of 1.0 would represent perfect efficiency, meaning all energy consumed is used solely by the IT equipment. In reality, data centers consume energy for cooling, lighting, power distribution losses, and other auxiliary systems. Therefore, a PUE value is always greater than 1.0. Lower PUE values indicate higher energy efficiency.

The primary purpose of measuring PUE is to identify areas where energy consumption can be reduced. By understanding how much energy is being used by non-IT components, data center operators can implement strategies to improve efficiency. These strategies might include optimizing cooling systems, improving insulation, using more efficient power distribution units, and implementing better airflow management. Regularly monitoring and reporting PUE allows for tracking the effectiveness of these efficiency improvements over time. Many organizations strive to achieve PUE values close to 1.0, as this not only reduces operational costs but also minimizes the environmental impact of data center operations.
