Techniques counterpoint refers to the set of methods used to write counterpoint, the art of creating independent melodic lines that work with a given melody or harmonic framework. The aim is to produce polyphonic texture while maintaining clear voice-leading, balanced rhythm, and consonant harmony. Core concerns include the treatment of dissonance, motion between voices, and preserving distinctive melodic contours in each voice.

Historically, counterpoint developed from Renaissance practices, where species counterpoint taught rules for consonance against a cantus firmus. Later Baroque practice emphasized tonal harmony, functional progression, and forms such as fugue and canon, while still valuing smooth voice-leading and purposeful imitation. Modern discussions extend these ideas to varied textures and harmonic systems.

Common techniques include carefully graded note values in species counterpoint, preparation and resolution of dissonances on weak beats, and avoidance of parallel perfect consonances and hidden fifths or octaves. Other devices include imitation, canon, subject entries, augmentation, diminution, retrograde, inversion, sequence, and the use of pedal points. Melodies are shaped to encourage contrary motion and to minimize voice crossing, which can obscure independence.
