A taunøytrino, symbolized as ντ, is a fundamental elementary particle, a type of lepton. It is the neutrino associated with the tau lepton. Like all neutrinos, the taunøytrino has no electric charge and a very small mass, which is still being precisely measured. Neutrinos interact only through the weak nuclear force and gravity, making them extremely difficult to detect.

Taunøytrinos are produced in certain types of particle decays, such as the decay of the tau lepton itself. They also play a role in astrophysical phenomena, like supernova explosions. The existence of the taunøytrino was experimentally confirmed in 2000 at the Fermilab DONUT experiment, which observed interactions consistent with the particle.

Neutrinos, including the taunøytrino, exist in three "flavors": electron neutrino, muon neutrino, and tau neutrino. These flavors correspond to the three charged leptons: the electron, the muon, and the tau. Neutrino oscillation is a quantum mechanical phenomenon where a neutrino of one flavor can transform into another flavor as it travels. This discovery of neutrino oscillation, which implies that neutrinos have mass, was a significant breakthrough in particle physics and led to a Nobel Prize in Physics.
