Tasometsä is a Finnish term that translates to "layered forest" or "tiered forest." It describes a forest structure characterized by distinct vertical layers of vegetation, each occupying a specific height range. This multi-layered structure is a common feature in many temperate and boreal forests, though the specific composition and density of each layer can vary significantly based on climate, soil conditions, and forest age.

The uppermost layer, known as the emergent layer or canopy, consists of the tallest trees, whose crowns may extend above the general forest ceiling. Beneath this is the main canopy layer, formed by the crowns of the dominant trees that create a more or less continuous cover. Below the main canopy is the understory, which includes smaller trees, shrubs, and tall herbaceous plants that can tolerate the reduced light levels. Finally, the forest floor or herb layer comprises low-growing plants, mosses, lichens, and ground cover.
