Tasasuuntauspiiri is a Finnish term that translates to "rectifier circuit" in English. It is an electronic circuit that converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). AC is characterized by its current periodically reversing direction, while DC flows in only one direction. Rectifier circuits are fundamental components in many electronic devices, enabling them to operate from standard AC power sources like wall outlets.

The most basic form of a rectifier circuit is the half-wave rectifier, which uses a single diode. A diode is a semiconductor device that allows current to flow in only one direction. In a half-wave rectifier, the diode allows only half of the AC waveform to pass through, effectively blocking the other half. This results in a pulsating DC output, which is not ideal for many applications.

A more common and effective type is the full-wave rectifier. A full-wave rectifier utilizes multiple diodes, typically arranged in a bridge configuration (known as a diode bridge rectifier) or using a center-tapped transformer. These circuits convert both halves of the AC waveform into a unidirectional current. This results in a more continuous, though still pulsating, DC output.

To achieve a smoother DC output, rectifier circuits are often paired with filtering components, such as capacitors. A capacitor can store electrical energy and release it when the voltage from the rectifier drops, smoothing out the pulsations. Further smoothing can be achieved with inductors. The combination of rectification and filtering is crucial for powering sensitive electronic components that require a stable DC voltage. Rectifier circuits are found in power supplies for computers, mobile phone chargers, and virtually any electronic device that connects to mains electricity.
