Tasakaalustumist refers to the process of achieving equilibrium or balance. In physics, it describes a state where opposing forces are equal, resulting in no net change in motion. An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion continues in motion with constant velocity, according to Newton's first law of motion, when the net force acting upon it is zero. This is a state of dynamic equilibrium if the object is moving with constant velocity, or static equilibrium if the object is at rest.

In chemistry, tasakaalustumist is observed in reversible reactions where the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction. At this point, the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant, although the reactions continue to occur in both directions. This chemical equilibrium is a dynamic state.
