Simple checksums might involve summing up the byte values of the data, while more sophisticated algorithms like Cyclic Redundancy Checks (CRCs) or cryptographic hash functions provide stronger error detection capabilities. The choice of algorithm depends on the sensitivity of the data and the expected types of errors. For instance, CRCs are commonly used in networking protocols and storage devices to ensure data integrity. Cryptographic hash functions, such as SHA-256, are used not only for error detection but also for data integrity verification and security purposes, as they are designed to be computationally infeasible to find two different inputs that produce the same output.
