Wilhuff Tarkin, commonly known as Grand Moff Tarkin, is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise. He holds the rank of Grand Moff, a title used for the Imperial governor responsible for the Outer Rim Territories, and serves as a high-ranking administrator within the Galactic Empire. He is best known as the commander of the Death Star, the Empire’s space-station superweapon, and as a ruthless enforcer of Imperial rule.

Tarkin first appears in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977), where he is portrayed by Peter Cushing. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016), the character is depicted via CGI to show a younger version, expanding on his involvement with the Death Star project. Across these appearances, Tarkin is presented as a calculating and authoritative leader who works with Darth Vader to suppress the Rebel Alliance and to demonstrate the Death Star’s power.

Notable actions attributed to Tarkin include ordering the destruction of Alderaan as a demonstration of the Death Star’s capabilities, following the capture of Princess Leia and a Rebel reconnaissance mission.
