Tarenullázás is the process of setting a weighing instrument to zero by accounting for the weight of a container or packaging, so that subsequent measurements reflect only the contents. The term combines the English word tare (the weight of packaging or container) with nullázás (zeroing) and is used in Hungarian to describe the standard practice in weighing.

The procedure typically involves placing an empty container on the scale and activating the tare function to cancel its weight. Some scales perform tare automatically when a container is detected, while others require a manual input. After taring, the display shows the net weight of anything added to the container. In laboratories, industrial environments, and retail contexts, tare helps improve accuracy, speeds up repetitive measurements, and ensures consistent dosing or pricing.

Tarenullázás is especially important in batching, packaging lines, and quantity calculations, where the mass of packaging must not affect the result. It also plays a role in calibration and traceability, as tare values should be known and documented for quality control. Limitations include scale drift, incomplete taring, and contamination of the tare mass, all of which can introduce errors if not managed properly.

Best practices include regular calibration of scales, verifying tare values with certified weights, and performing tare each time the container or material changes. In automated systems, tare events should be logged to support traceability.
