Tallennuslämmittimet, often translated as storage heaters or thermal storage heaters, are electrical heating devices that store heat during off-peak electricity hours and release it into a room as needed. They are designed to take advantage of lower electricity prices that are typically offered during the night or other designated off-peak periods. The core component of a storage heater is a mass of heat-retaining material, usually dense refractory bricks, surrounded by an insulated casing.

During the off-peak electricity period, a thermostat within the heater controls the charging process. Electricity is passed through a heating element that heats the refractory core. The insulation around the core minimizes heat loss, allowing the stored heat to be retained until it is needed. When the room temperature drops below a set point during the day, a separate thermostat or damper mechanism releases the stored heat into the room, usually through convection and radiation.

The amount of heat stored and released is controlled by the user through adjustable controls. These typically include a "charge control" that dictates how much electricity is drawn during the off-peak period, and a "heat output control" that regulates the rate at which stored heat is released into the room. Modern storage heaters often incorporate electronic controls and fan assistance to improve efficiency and user experience. They are commonly found in older housing stock or in areas where off-peak electricity tariffs are significantly cheaper than standard rates.
