A talajtömb, often translated as soil block, is a method of starting seedlings in small cubes of compressed soil. These soil blocks are made by pressing soil into a specialized mold, creating a self-contained unit for each seed. The primary benefit of this method is that it eliminates the need for plastic seed trays or pots, offering a more sustainable approach to starting plants.

When seedlings are grown in soil blocks, their roots grow downwards and outwards. Crucially, the roots are air-pruned when they reach the edge of the soil block and are exposed to dry air. This prevents the circling of roots that can occur in traditional pots, leading to healthier, more robust root systems. When it is time to transplant, the entire soil block is planted into the ground or a larger container. This minimizes root disturbance, as the seedling's root ball remains intact.

The soil mixture used for soil blocks typically includes ingredients like peat or coco coir, compost, and perlite or vermiculite to ensure good aeration and moisture retention. Specialized tools are used to create the blocks and to press the indentations for the seeds. This technique is favored by many gardeners and small-scale farmers for its environmental benefits and for producing strong, healthy transplants.
