Talajszemcsék are the individual solid particles that make up soil. They are the fundamental building blocks of soil structure and vary greatly in size, shape, and composition. The primary classifications of soil particles are sand, silt, and clay, often referred to as the soil separates.

Sand particles are the largest, ranging from 0.05 to 2 millimeters in diameter. They feel gritty to the touch and are primarily composed of mineral fragments, often quartz. Sand particles do not bind together well, leading to soils with good drainage but poor water retention and fertility.

Silt particles are smaller than sand, typically between 0.002 and 0.05 millimeters in diameter. Silt feels smooth or floury when dry and slightly gritty when wet. Soils with a high silt content can hold more water than sandy soils and are generally fertile, though they can be prone to compaction and erosion.

Clay particles are the smallest, with diameters less than 0.002 millimeters. They are often described as sticky when wet and hard when dry. Clay particles have a platy structure and a large surface area relative to their size, which allows them to attract and hold water and nutrients. However, clay soils can be poorly drained and difficult to work with due to their tendency to compact and become impermeable.

The relative proportions of sand, silt, and clay in a soil determine its texture, which in turn influences many of its physical and chemical properties, including water infiltration, aeration, nutrient availability, and suitability for different types of plant growth. Soil texture is a key factor in agricultural productivity and ecological function.
