Taistelukiväärit, or battle rifles, are a category of select-fire rifles that typically fire a full-power rifle cartridge. These are distinct from assault rifles, which generally use intermediate cartridges. The full-power cartridges of battle rifles provide greater range and penetration capabilities compared to their assault rifle counterparts. Historically, battle rifles were the standard infantry weapon before the widespread adoption of assault rifles. Examples include the FN FAL, G3, and M14.

The development of battle rifles often stemmed from the need for a powerful and versatile weapon for infantry. During and after World War II, military forces evaluated the effectiveness of their existing rifles. The desire for a rifle that could engage targets at longer ranges with greater effectiveness than submachine guns, but also offer automatic fire capabilities, led to the concept of the battle rifle. Their larger caliber rounds meant they typically had more recoil and a lower magazine capacity compared to assault rifles.

While assault rifles largely replaced battle rifles as the primary infantry weapon in most modern militaries due to their lighter weight, more manageable recoil, and higher ammunition capacity, battle rifles still find use in specific roles. They are often employed by designated marksmen, special forces units, or for situations where increased range and power are paramount. Their enduring appeal lies in their robustness and the significant ballistic performance of their full-power cartridges.
