Süütamisenergia, commonly referred to as ignition energy, is the minimum amount of energy required to ignite a combustible fuel–air mixture under defined conditions. It is a characteristic of both the mixture and the ignition source, often expressed as the minimum ignition energy (MIE).

Ignition energy corresponds to the energy necessary to form a flame kernel that can grow into a self-sustaining flame. It depends on the energy delivery method (electrical spark, hot surface, or chemical heat), the mixture composition, pressure, and temperature.

In practice, MIE is determined under standardized conditions and varies widely by fuel. Hydrogen–air mixtures typically ignite at energies as low as tens of microjoules (about 0.01–0.1 mJ). Hydrocarbon–air mixtures such as methane or propane generally require hundreds of microjoules to a few millijoules, depending on equivalence ratio and pressure. Gasoline vapors are highly variable and can have higher MIE values under some conditions.

MIE is a key parameter in safety engineering and engine design. It helps assess ignition sources, compare fuels, and establish safe operating procedures. Higher-energy ignition systems are used when reliability is needed in harsh conditions, while lower-energy sources reduce unnecessary ignition risk.
