Süsivesinikurühmad, also known as hydrocarbon groups or alkyl groups, are fundamental building blocks in organic chemistry. They are derived from hydrocarbons by removing one or more hydrogen atoms. A hydrocarbon is a compound composed solely of carbon and hydrogen atoms. When a hydrogen atom is removed from a hydrocarbon, the remaining part is called a hydrocarbon group, and it can then attach to other atoms or molecules.

The simplest hydrocarbon group is the methyl group (-CH3), derived from methane (CH4). Other common examples include ethyl (-CH2CH3) from ethane (C2H6), propyl (-CH2CH2CH3) from propane (C3H8), and butyl (-CH2CH2CH2CH3) from butane (C4H10). These groups can be straight-chained (linear) or branched. For instance, the butyl group can exist as n-butyl (straight chain) or as isobutyl, sec-butyl, or tert-butyl (branched forms).

Hydrocarbon groups are characterized by their nonpolar nature due to the similar electronegativity of carbon and hydrogen. This nonpolar character influences the solubility and reactivity of the molecules they are part of, generally making them soluble in nonpolar solvents and less reactive than molecules containing polar functional groups. They are ubiquitous in organic compounds, forming the backbone of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and aromatic compounds, as well as being integral parts of more complex organic molecules like alcohols, carboxylic acids, and amines. Understanding hydrocarbon groups is crucial for comprehending the structure, properties, and reactions of organic matter.
