Sünteesijaid, often translated as "synthesizers" in English, refers to electronic musical instruments capable of producing a wide range of sounds. These instruments work by generating and manipulating electronic signals to create audio waveforms. Unlike traditional instruments that produce sound through physical vibration, synthesizers create sound entirely through electronic means.

The fundamental components of a synthesizer include oscillators, which generate basic waveforms like sine, square, sawtooth, and triangle waves; filters, which shape the tonal quality of the sound by removing or emphasizing certain frequencies; amplifiers, which control the volume of the sound; and envelopes, which define how the sound changes over time in terms of amplitude, pitch, or filter cutoff.

Synthesizers have evolved significantly since their inception. Early analog synthesizers were complex and often monophonic, meaning they could play only one note at a time. The development of digital technology led to polyphonic synthesizers, capable of playing multiple notes simultaneously, and later to digital synthesizers that used sampling and other digital synthesis methods. Modern synthesizers can be hardware units or software-based (virtual instruments) that run on computers.
