Südameblokk, also known as heart block or atrioventricular block, is a condition where there is a delay or interruption in the electrical conduction between the atria and the ventricles of the heart. The heart's electrical system normally coordinates the contraction of its chambers, ensuring efficient blood pumping. This coordination is crucial for maintaining a regular heartbeat.

There are different degrees of heart block. First-degree heart block is the mildest form, where the electrical signal is slowed down but still reaches the ventricles. This often causes no symptoms and may not require treatment. Second-degree heart block occurs when some electrical signals from the atria do not reach the ventricles, resulting in skipped beats. This can be further classified into Mobitz type I (Wenckebach) and Mobitz type II. In Mobitz type I, the delay progressively lengthens until a beat is dropped. In Mobitz type II, the dropped beats are more unpredictable. Third-degree heart block, also known as complete heart block, is the most severe. In this case, no electrical signals from the atria reach the ventricles, and the ventricles initiate their own slow, independent rhythm. This can lead to significant symptoms and requires immediate medical attention.

Symptoms of heart block can vary depending on the degree and severity. Mild forms may be asymptomatic, while more severe blocks can cause dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, chest pain, and fatigue. Causes of heart block include aging, heart disease, certain medications, and congenital conditions. Diagnosis typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG) to record the heart's electrical activity. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the block and may involve medication to regulate heart rate, or in more severe cases, a pacemaker implantation to help maintain a regular heartbeat.
