Søkemodeller, or search models, are fundamental components of information retrieval systems. They represent the techniques and algorithms used to determine how relevant documents are to a given query. The primary goal of a søkemodell is to rank documents in order of their likelihood of satisfying the user's information need.

Different søkemodeller employ various approaches. Early models, like the Boolean model, treated queries and documents as sets of terms. Documents were considered relevant only if they contained all the terms specified in the query. This model, while simple, lacked flexibility and the ability to rank results.

The probabilistic model emerged as a significant advancement, viewing relevance as a probability. It estimates the probability that a document is relevant to a query based on the occurrence of terms. A well-known example is the Binary Independence Model (BIM).

Vector space models represent documents and queries as vectors in a high-dimensional space. The similarity between a query vector and a document vector is calculated, often using cosine similarity, to determine relevance. This approach allows for ranking and handles partial term matches.

More sophisticated models, such as language models, view retrieval as a problem of estimating the probability of a query being generated by a document's language model. These models excel at capturing term dependencies and nuances.

Modern search engines often utilize hybrid approaches, combining elements from various models to achieve optimal performance. The choice of søkemodell significantly impacts the quality and effectiveness of a search engine's results.
