Sószerkezet refers to the crystal arrangement of the salt NaCl, which is the most common naturally occurring ionic solid. The unit cell of NaCl is a perfect cube in which each ion is surrounded by six ions of the opposite charge. The sodium and chloride ions alternate positions, giving the solid its characteristic face‐centered cubic (FCC) symmetry. The lattice parameter is approximately 0.564 nanometers, and the crystal lattice is highly symmetrical, which accounts for the cubic habit of haematite crystals.

The arrangement of the ions in the lattice determines many of the physical properties of the crystal. Because sodium and chloride ions are the same size and both have a single charge, the structure is highly stable and has a high melting point of about 801 °C. The crystal structure also dictates the ionicity of thermal expansion and the transparency of the crystal under visible light. The coordination number of 6 for each ion creates a dense packing reminiscent of the sodium chloride crystal type, which is the most common ionomeric arrangement for divalent halides.

The classification of ionic crystals by their lattice types (FCC, BCC, HCP, etc.) is a cornerstone of crystallography, helping scientists relate microscopic arrangements to macroscopic properties such as hardness, melting point, and electrical conductivity. The study of sószerkezet provides insight into how ionic bonds and lattice geometry influence the functional characteristics of both natural and synthetic materials.
