Sædcellen, also known as a sperm cell or spermatozoon, is the male reproductive cell of sexually reproducing animals. Its primary function is to fertilize a female ovum (egg cell) to initiate the development of a new organism. The sædcellen is a highly specialized cell, designed for motility and the delivery of genetic material.

Structurally, a sædcellen consists of three main parts: the head, the midpiece, and the tail. The head contains the nucleus, which holds the haploid set of chromosomes (half the genetic material of the organism). At the very tip of the head is the acrosome, a cap-like structure containing enzymes that are crucial for penetrating the egg's outer layers. The midpiece is packed with mitochondria, which provide the energy needed for the tail's movement. The tail, or flagellum, is a whip-like appendage that propels the sædcellen through the female reproductive tract.

The production of sædceller is called spermatogenesis and occurs in the testes. This process begins at puberty and continues throughout a male's reproductive life. Millions of sædceller are produced daily. Upon ejaculation, sædceller are released within semen, a fluid that nourishes and transports them. Their journey towards the egg is challenging, with only a fraction surviving the acidic environment of the vagina and reaching the fallopian tubes where fertilization typically takes place.
