A säätöpiiri, or control loop, is a fundamental concept in engineering and automation. It is a system designed to maintain a desired state of a process or variable by continuously measuring the output, comparing it to a setpoint, and adjusting an input accordingly. The primary goal of a säätöpiiri is to minimize the difference between the actual output and the desired output, known as the error.

The basic components of a säätöpiiri typically include a sensor, a controller, and an actuator. The sensor measures the current value of the variable being controlled. This measurement is then sent to the controller, which compares it to the setpoint. Based on the difference, or error, the controller generates a control signal. This signal is then sent to the actuator, which modifies the input to the process to bring the output closer to the setpoint.

There are two main types of säätöpiiri: open-loop and closed-loop. In an open-loop system, the controller's action is independent of the process output. It operates based on a pre-determined model or timing. In contrast, a closed-loop system, also known as a feedback control loop, uses the measured output to influence the controller's action, creating a continuous cycle of measurement, comparison, and adjustment. This feedback mechanism allows closed-loop systems to adapt to disturbances and maintain stability more effectively. Common examples include thermostats controlling room temperature and cruise control systems in vehicles.
