Szövetépítés, which translates to "tissue engineering" in English, is a multidisciplinary field that combines engineering and biological sciences to develop biological substitutes that restore, maintain, or improve tissue function or a whole organ. The ultimate aim of tissue engineering is to repair or replace damaged tissues and organs.

The basic principles of tissue engineering involve the use of cells, engineering materials (scaffolds), and biochemical or physicochemical factors. These three components are typically combined to regenerate tissues. Cells can be autologous (from the patient), allogeneic (from a donor of the same species), or xenogeneic (from a different species). Scaffolds provide a structural framework for cells to grow on and differentiate, guiding the formation of new tissue. These scaffolds can be natural or synthetic materials. Biochemical and physicochemical factors include growth factors, cytokines, and mechanical stimuli that influence cell behavior and tissue development.

Tissue engineering approaches can be broadly categorized into three types: cell-based, scaffold-based, and a combination of both. Cell-based approaches focus on introducing cells directly to the site of injury. Scaffold-based approaches utilize a porous scaffold that is seeded with cells or designed to recruit the body's own cells to populate it. Combined approaches leverage the benefits of both cells and scaffolds.

Significant progress has been made in various areas of tissue engineering, including the regeneration of skin, cartilage, bone, and blood vessels. Research is ongoing to develop engineered tissues for more complex organs such as the heart, liver, and kidney, with the potential to revolutionize regenerative medicine and address organ shortages.
