Szövetátültetés, or tissue transplantation, is a medical procedure where healthy tissue is taken from one part of a person's body or from another person and implanted into a recipient. This process is used to replace or repair damaged or diseased tissue.

The types of tissue that can be transplanted are diverse. Common examples include skin grafts for burn victims, bone grafts to repair fractures or aid in reconstructive surgery, and cornea transplants to restore vision. In some cases, more complex tissues like cartilage or even muscle tissue can also be transplanted.

The source of the transplanted tissue can be autologous, meaning it comes from the recipient themselves (e.g., a skin graft from the thigh to a burn on the leg). It can also be allogeneic, where the tissue comes from a genetically different individual, typically a donor. This is common in cornea and bone donations.

Tissue transplantation plays a crucial role in modern medicine, significantly improving the quality of life for many patients by restoring function, appearance, and alleviating pain. Successful transplantation often depends on the compatibility between donor and recipient tissue and the recipient's immune system response. While the body's immune system may recognize transplanted tissue as foreign, leading to rejection, various medical strategies, including immunosuppressive medications, are employed to minimize this risk and ensure the long-term viability of the transplanted tissue.
