Szóalakítás is a Hungarian linguistic term referring to the process of word formation. It encompasses the various ways new words are created or existing words are modified within the Hungarian language. This can happen through several mechanisms, including derivation, compounding, and conversion.

Derivation involves adding prefixes or suffixes to a root word to create a new word with a different meaning or grammatical function. For example, adding the suffix -ség to the adjective szép (beautiful) creates the noun szépség (beauty). Prefixes are also commonly used, such as in the verb felolvas (to read aloud), where 'fel-' is a prefix indicating upward movement or completion.

Compounding is the joining of two or more words to form a single new word. Hungarian is particularly rich in compounding. An example is ablakpárkány (windowsill), formed from ablak (window) and párkány (ledge). This process allows for the creation of highly specific and descriptive terms.

Conversion, also known as zero derivation, involves changing the grammatical category of a word without adding any affixes. While less common in Hungarian than in some other languages, it can occur. For instance, a verb might be used as a noun or vice versa in certain contexts, though this often involves subtle shifts in meaning or usage.
