Szívhangok are the sounds produced by the heart during its pumping cycle. These sounds are primarily caused by the closure of the heart valves. In a healthy heart, there are typically two main heart sounds, often described as "lub-dub." The first heart sound, "lub," is generated by the closing of the mitral and tricuspid valves, which separate the atria from the ventricles. This sound marks the beginning of ventricular systole, the contraction phase of the ventricles. The second heart sound, "dub," is caused by the closing of the aortic and pulmonic valves, which separate the ventricles from the aorta and pulmonary artery, respectively. This sound signifies the end of ventricular systole and the beginning of ventricular diastole, the relaxation phase.

Variations or extra sounds can sometimes be heard. Murmurs, for instance, are additional or unusual sounds that can occur due to turbulent blood flow within the heart. This turbulence can be caused by narrowed or leaky valves, or by abnormal openings between heart chambers. Gallops are extra heart sounds that occur during diastole, often described as a "triple rhythm." These can indicate heart disease. Other abnormal sounds include clicks and rubs. Heart sounds are detected using a stethoscope and are an important diagnostic tool for evaluating heart function and identifying potential cardiac abnormalities. The timing, loudness, and quality of heart sounds provide valuable clues to a physician about the health of the heart's valves and chambers.
