Szénfeldolgozásban refers to the processing of coal. Beyond physical processing, chemical methods are also employed. Carbonization, for example, involves heating coal in the absence of air to produce coke, coal gas, and coal tar. Coke is essential in the steelmaking industry as a fuel and reducing agent. Coal gas can be used as a fuel or as a feedstock for producing chemicals. Direct liquefaction involves the high-pressure reaction of coal with hydrogen, while indirect liquefaction typically uses gasification to produce syngas, which is then converted into liquid fuels via processes like the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

In modern contexts, the focus of szénfeldolgozásban is also shifting towards cleaner technologies and carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS) to mitigate the environmental impact associated with coal combustion and processing.
