Szájnyálkahártya refers to the mucous membrane lining the inside of the mouth. It is a specialized type of epithelial tissue that plays a crucial role in protecting the oral cavity from mechanical damage, pathogens, and dehydration. The szájnyálkahártya is moist, pink, and can vary in thickness and texture depending on its location within the mouth.

The oral mucosa can be broadly classified into three main types: masticatory, lining, and specialized mucosa. Masticatory mucosa, such as that found on the gums and the hard palate, is keratinized and designed to withstand the abrasive forces of chewing. Lining mucosa, covering the cheeks, lips, floor of the mouth, and soft palate, is non-keratinized and more flexible, allowing for speech and swallowing. Specialized mucosa, found on the dorsal surface of the tongue, contains taste buds and papillae responsible for taste sensation and manipulating food.

The szájnyálkahártya is rich in blood vessels and nerve endings, contributing to its sensitivity and ability to detect temperature, texture, and pain. It also contains numerous glands that produce saliva, which is essential for lubricating the mouth, aiding in digestion, and maintaining oral hygiene. Various conditions can affect the szájnyálkahártya, including infections, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and oral cancer. Maintaining good oral hygiene is vital for the health of this delicate tissue.
