In a szilárdfolyékony state, the material possesses a rigid, three-dimensional network structure, characteristic of a solid. This network traps a liquid phase within its pores or interstices. While the solid network provides structural integrity and allows the material to maintain a definite shape under stress, the trapped liquid allows for some degree of flow or deformation. The viscosity of the material in this state can vary greatly, depending on the concentration of solid particles, the nature of the liquid, and the strength of the interactions between them.

The transition to and from the szilárdfolyékony state is often reversible. Applying shear stress can sometimes break down the solid network, causing the material to behave more like a liquid (shear-thinning behavior). When the stress is removed, the network can reform, and the material returns to its solid-like or gel state. This property is exploited in various applications, such as in paints, adhesives, and food products, where controlled flow and solidification are desired. Examples include ketchup, which is thick in its container but flows easily when shaken, or certain types of toothpaste.
