szilágy

Szilágy is a historical administrative county in the Kingdom of Hungary. Located in the northwestern part of the historical Transylvania region, it was bordered by the counties of Bihar, Hajdú, Szatmár, Közép-Szolnok, and Kolozs. The county seat was initially at Szilágysomlyó, later moved to Dés. The Szilágy region is characterized by rolling hills and fertile plains, with the Szamos river flowing through its territory.

Historically, Szilágy was part of the Kingdom of Hungary for centuries. Following the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, the territory was ceded to Romania. Within Romania, the historical county was reorganized and its territory has been divided among various modern counties, primarily Sălaj County, with parts also falling into Cluj and Satu Mare counties. The region has a mixed ethnic heritage, with significant Hungarian and Romanian populations. The economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, with notable production of grains, fruits, and wine. Industrial development occurred later in the 20th century, particularly in urban centers like Dés. The cultural landscape reflects its diverse history, with architectural remnants and traditions from both Hungarian and Romanian influences.
