Szilikátok is the Hungarian word for silicates. Silicates are a large and diverse class of compounds, with silica (silicon dioxide) as their most common component. In chemistry, silicates are a family of minerals composed of silicon, oxygen, and metal cations. They are the most abundant class of minerals in the Earth's crust, making up over 90% of it. This abundance is due to the Earth's formation processes and the prevalence of silicon and oxygen in the universe.

The basic building block of all silicates is the silicon-oxygen tetrahedron, often denoted as [SiO4]4-. In this structure, a silicon atom is bonded to four oxygen atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement. Common examples of silicates include quartz (SiO2), feldspar, mica, and olivine. These minerals are fundamental to the formation of rocks, and their presence and variations are key to understanding geology. Beyond geology, silicates have numerous industrial applications. They are used in the production of glass, ceramics, cement, and as fillers in plastics and rubber.
