Szilárdtesthajtóművek, often translated as solid-propellant rocket engines, are a type of rocket engine that uses a solid propellant mixture to generate thrust. The propellant is a pre-mixed solid compound containing both fuel and oxidizer, typically encased in a solid block known as a grain. When ignited, the propellant burns from the exposed surface, producing hot exhaust gases that are expelled through a nozzle at high speed.

The design of a solid-propellant rocket engine is relatively simple compared to liquid-propellant engines. Once ignited, a solid-propellant rocket engine cannot be easily throttled or shut down. The burn rate is largely dependent on the propellant composition and the surface area exposed to combustion. This makes them suitable for applications requiring a high, sustained thrust for a specific duration, such as initial boost phases of rockets, missiles, and fireworks. Their simplicity, reliability, and relatively low cost have made them a popular choice for many aerospace and defense applications. However, the inability to control thrust once ignited is a significant limitation for missions requiring complex maneuvers or precise adjustments.
