Szerszámacélek, often translated as tool steels, are a group of carbon and alloy steels that are particularly well-suited for the manufacturing of tools. Their primary characteristic is their hardness, toughness, and resistance to wear, abrasion, and deformation, even at elevated temperatures. These properties are achieved through careful control of chemical composition and heat treatment processes.

The composition of tool steels typically includes elements such as carbon, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, chromium, and cobalt. Carbon content is a crucial factor, as it contributes significantly to hardness. Alloying elements are added to enhance specific properties. For example, tungsten and molybdenum improve hot hardness, meaning the steel can retain its hardness and cutting ability at high temperatures generated during machining. High-speed steels (HSS) are known for their ability to maintain hardness at very high cutting speeds. Plastic mold steels are used in the production of plastic components.

The heat treatment of tool steels is critical to achieving their desired performance. This typically involves hardening, where the steel is heated to a specific temperature and then quenched, followed by tempering, which reduces brittleness and increases toughness.
