Szemhéjon is a Hungarian word that translates to "eyelid" in English. It refers to the movable folds of skin that cover and protect the eyeball. Humans and many other animals have upper and lower eyelids. These eyelids play a crucial role in eye health. They help to distribute tears across the surface of the eye, keeping it moist and clear. Blinking, the rapid closing and opening of the eyelids, also serves to remove dust and debris from the eye's surface and to spread the tear film.

The eyelid itself is composed of several layers, including skin, muscle, and connective tissue. The skin of the eyelid is the thinnest in the body, making it particularly susceptible to damage and aging. Muscles within the eyelid allow for blinking and for raising or lowering the eyelid.
