Szaruhártyaelv refers to the cornea, the transparent outer layer at the front of the eye. It covers the iris, pupil, and anterior chamber. The cornea's primary function is to refract, or bend, light. In fact, it accounts for about two-thirds of the eye's total focusing power. Its smooth, clear surface is crucial for sharp vision.

The cornea is composed of several layers. The outermost is the epithelium, which protects the eye from dirt and germs. Beneath this lies Bowman's layer, a tough fibrous tissue. The stroma makes up the bulk of the cornea, providing its structure. Descemet's membrane is a thin but strong layer, and the innermost layer is the endothelium, which pumps fluid out of the cornea to keep it clear.

Damage to the cornea, such as from injury or disease, can lead to clouding or distortion, resulting in impaired vision or even blindness. Conditions affecting the cornea include infections, abrasions, ulcers, and keratoconus, a condition where the cornea thins and bulges outward. Treatments for corneal problems range from eye drops and contact lenses to corneal transplantation, a surgical procedure to replace damaged corneal tissue with healthy donor tissue. Maintaining corneal health is vital for clear and comfortable sight.
