Syyspäiväntasauksen, also known as the autumnal equinox, occurs around September 22 or 23 in the Northern Hemisphere and around March 20 or 21 in the Southern Hemisphere. This astronomical event marks the transition from summer to autumn in the Northern Hemisphere and from winter to spring in the Southern Hemisphere.

During the equinox, the Earth's axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the Sun. This results in roughly equal amounts of daylight and darkness across the globe, with approximately 12 hours of each. The Sun rises almost exactly due east and sets almost exactly due west on this day.
