Syväoppimisverkko, or deep learning network in English, is a type of artificial neural network with multiple layers, allowing it to learn complex patterns from data. These networks are inspired by the structure and function of the human brain, with interconnected nodes or "neurons" organized in an input layer, hidden layers, and an output layer. The "deep" in deep learning refers to the presence of many hidden layers, which enable the network to extract hierarchical features from raw data.

During the training process, a deep learning network is fed a large dataset. Each layer processes the information from the previous layer, progressively identifying more abstract and sophisticated features. For example, in image recognition, early layers might detect edges, while deeper layers could recognize shapes, objects, and ultimately, entire scenes. The network adjusts the connections between its neurons, known as weights, to minimize errors between its predictions and the actual outcomes in the training data. This iterative process allows the network to improve its performance over time.
