Syväkuilut, translated as "deep trenches," refers to the deepest parts of the Earth's oceans. These are narrow, steep-sided depressions in the ocean floor that reach extreme depths, far exceeding the average ocean depth. The most famous and deepest of these is the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean.

The formation of syväkuilut is primarily attributed to a geological process called subduction. This occurs at convergent plate boundaries where one tectonic plate slides beneath another and sinks into the Earth's mantle. The exploration of syväkuilut is challenging due to the extreme environmental conditions. Specialized submersibles and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are required to withstand the immense pressure and conduct scientific research. Studying these deep-sea environments provides valuable insights into plate tectonics, marine biology, and the limits of life on Earth.
