Sytytyspuola, also known as an ignition coil, is a crucial component in the ignition system of an internal combustion engine. Its primary function is to transform the low voltage from the vehicle's battery into the high voltage required to create an electrical spark. This spark ignites the air-fuel mixture in the engine's cylinders, initiating the combustion process that powers the vehicle.

The sytytyspuola operates based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It typically consists of two windings of copper wire, known as the primary and secondary coils, wrapped around a soft iron core. When a low-voltage current from the battery flows through the primary coil, it generates a magnetic field. When this current is suddenly interrupted, the magnetic field collapses. This rapid change in the magnetic field induces a much higher voltage in the secondary coil, which has many more turns of wire than the primary coil.

This high voltage is then transmitted through a spark plug wire to the spark plug. The spark plug creates a gap across which the high voltage jumps, producing the necessary spark to ignite the fuel. In modern vehicles, individual sytytyspuolas are often used for each cylinder, eliminating the need for a distributor and spark plug wires.
