Cytokinesis is a fundamental biological process that occurs during cell division in eukaryotic cells. It is the physical process by which the cytoplasm of a cell is divided to form two distinct daughter cells. Cytokinesis typically follows mitosis or meiosis, the processes that divide the cell nucleus. The precise mechanisms of cytokinesis differ between animal cells and plant cells, reflecting their distinct structural components.

In animal cells, cytokinesis involves the formation of a contractile ring composed of actin and myosin filaments. This ring constricts around the middle of the cell, creating a cleavage furrow that deepens until the cell pinches into two. The cell membrane invaginates at the furrow, eventually separating the two nascent daughter cells.

Plant cells, on the other hand, possess a rigid cell wall that prevents them from undergoing cytokinesis through simple pinching. Instead, a cell plate forms in the center of the cell. Vesicles derived from the Golgi apparatus, containing cell wall material, gather along the metaphase plate. These vesicles fuse to form the cell plate, which gradually grows outward towards the existing cell walls. Eventually, the cell plate matures into a new cell wall, dividing the parent cell into two daughter cells.

Cytokinesis is a tightly regulated process, ensuring that the genetic material and cellular components are accurately distributed between the daughter cells. Errors in cytokinesis can lead to aneuploidy, where daughter cells have an abnormal number of chromosomes, or to multinucleated cells, which can have severe consequences for the organism. This process is crucial for growth, development, and tissue repair.
