Systólískt refers to the phase of the cardiac cycle when the heart muscle contracts and pumps blood out into the arteries. This contraction is the primary action that propels blood throughout the circulatory system. During systole, the ventricles, the lower chambers of the heart, forcefully squeeze, ejecting their contents. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta, the body's largest artery, to be distributed to the rest of the body. Simultaneously, the right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary artery, leading to the lungs for oxygenation.

The pressure within the arteries during this contraction phase is known as systolic blood pressure. It is the higher of the two numbers recorded when measuring blood pressure, with the lower number representing diastolic blood pressure, which occurs during the relaxation phase of the heart. Normal systolic blood pressure in adults at rest is typically around 120 mmHg, although this can vary based on age, health status, and other factors. Elevated systolic pressure can be an indicator of hypertension, a condition that increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. Conversely, abnormally low systolic pressure can suggest other underlying medical issues. The coordinated and rhythmic contraction of the heart during systole is essential for maintaining adequate blood flow and oxygen delivery to all tissues and organs.
