Syntaxforms are abstract representations of syntactic structure used in linguistics to capture the organizing templates that generate surface sentences. In generative and computational linguistics, a syntaxform encodes the hierarchical arrangement of categories (such as NP, VP, CP) and the functional relationships among them, while remaining neutral about specific surface realizations.

A syntaxform is typically more general than a single spoken or written sentence. Different surface forms can realize the same syntaxform through lexical choices, agreement patterns, and syntactic movements. The notion helps separate form from content and supports cross-linguistic comparison by providing a language-neutral template for sentence construction.

In practice, syntaxforms are used in grammar engineering and parsing, where a grammar assigns syntaxforms to strings and uses transformational rules to derive surface strings from underlying forms. In typology, researchers compare languages by examining how various surface realizations map to a common set of syntaxforms, enabling systematic cross-language observations about structure and function.

Examples can illustrate the idea without relying on any particular language. The English sentence “The cat sat on the mat” and its passive or wh-formed variants can be analyzed as different surface realizations of related syntaxforms that preserve underlying dependencies. Similarly, languages with fronted elements or inversion may share the same core syntaxform even if their surface syntax differs.
