The fluid is produced by the synovial membrane, a specialized connective tissue lining the joint capsule. This membrane secretes a fluid composed mainly of water, electrolytes, hyaluronic acid, and proteins, including enzymes and glycoproteins. The consistency of synovial fluid is a result of the high concentration of hyaluronic acid, which gives it its slippery and slightly viscous nature. Conditions affecting synovial fluid, such as inflammation or changes in its composition, can lead to joint pain and dysfunction.
