Syndiotaktisten refers to a specific type of tacticity found in polymers. Tacticity describes the stereochemical configuration of the repeating units in a polymer chain. In syndiotactic polymers, the pendant groups (the side groups attached to the polymer backbone) alternate in a regular pattern along the chain. Specifically, if you imagine the polymer backbone as a zig-zag line, the pendant groups would be consistently positioned on opposite sides of this line in an alternating fashion. This regular arrangement is in contrast to isotactic polymers, where the pendant groups are all on the same side, and atactic polymers, where the arrangement is random.

The syndiotactic structure arises during the polymerization process, often influenced by the catalyst used. For example, Ziegler-Natta catalysts and metallocene catalysts can be designed to promote syndiotactic polymerization. The degree of syndiotacticity, meaning how perfectly the alternating pattern is maintained, significantly impacts the physical and mechanical properties of the polymer. Syndiotactic polymers tend to be crystalline, leading to higher melting points, greater stiffness, and improved tensile strength compared to their atactic counterparts. This organized structure allows the polymer chains to pack more closely together. Examples of syndiotactic polymers include syndiotactic polystyrene and syndiotactic polypropylene.
