Synapsfunktion refers to the process by which neurons communicate with each other at specialized junctions called synapses. This communication is fundamental to all neural activity, enabling the transmission of information throughout the nervous system. A synapse typically consists of a presynaptic terminal, a synaptic cleft, and a postsynaptic membrane. When an electrical signal, or action potential, reaches the presynaptic terminal, it triggers the release of chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft. These neurotransmitters then bind to receptors on the postsynaptic membrane, which can either excite or inhibit the receiving neuron.

The efficacy of synaptic transmission can be modulated, a phenomenon known as synaptic plasticity. This plasticity allows for learning and memory formation, as synapses can strengthen or weaken over time based on their activity patterns. Long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) are two well-studied forms of synaptic plasticity. LTP involves a persistent strengthening of synapses, while LTD results in a persistent weakening. These changes in synaptic function are thought to underlie the brain's ability to adapt and store information. Dysregulation of synapsfunktion is implicated in various neurological and psychiatric disorders.
