Sydämentahdistin is the Finnish word for pacemaker. A cardiac pacemaker is a small, battery-operated device that is implanted in the chest to help regulate an abnormal heartbeat. The device consists of a pulse generator, which contains the battery and electronic circuitry, and one or more leads, which are thin wires that connect the pulse generator to the heart muscle. Pacemakers are typically implanted during a minimally invasive surgical procedure. The pulse generator is usually placed under the skin in the upper chest, and the leads are threaded through veins into the heart chambers. The settings of the pacemaker can be adjusted non-invasively using an external programmer to optimize the device's function for the individual patient. Modern pacemakers are highly sophisticated and can adapt to the patient's activity level, providing appropriate pacing when needed.
