sväljningsförmågan
Sväljningsförmågan, often referred to as swallowing ability, is the complex physiological process by which food and liquids are safely transported from the mouth to the stomach. This intricate function involves a coordinated sequence of voluntary and involuntary muscle movements, involving the oral cavity, pharynx, and esophagus. The process begins with the voluntary phase where food is chewed and mixed with saliva, forming a bolus. This bolus is then propelled to the back of the tongue, initiating the involuntary pharyngeal phase. During this phase, the soft palate elevates to close off the nasal cavity, the epiglottis covers the opening of the larynx to prevent aspiration into the airway, and the pharyngeal muscles contract to push the bolus down. Finally, the bolus enters the esophagus, where peristalsis, a series of wave-like muscle contractions, moves it towards the stomach.
Difficulties with swallowing, known as dysphagia, can arise from a variety of causes, including neurological conditions
