Svovelbinder, or sulfur binder, is a class of chemical agents designed to bind, neutralize, or remove sulfur-containing compounds such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and mercaptans from gases, liquids, or process streams. By reducing the reactivity and volatility of sulfur species, svovelbinders help prevent corrosion, odor, and toxicity in industrial systems.

In practice, a svovelbinder reacts with sulfur compounds to form stable adducts or precipitates, or it adsorbs sulfur onto a solid surface. The exact mechanism depends on the binder type; some act by redox conversion, others by chelation or scavenging onto sorbent materials. Efficiency depends on temperature, pressure, pH, and the chemical composition of the process stream.

Common applications include natural gas processing and petroleum refining, where hydrogen sulfide and mercaptans are removed to meet product specs; water and wastewater treatment to reduce odor and corrosion; mining and mineral processing to manage sulfide-related issues; and biogas cleanup.

Typical svovelbinders include metal oxide scavengers (notably zinc oxide and iron oxide), metal salts, and amine- or sulfide-based compounds. Some systems use regenerable sorbents, while others require replacement of exhausted materials.

Environmental and safety considerations apply to svovelbinders. Spent materials must be disposed of according to local regulations, and handling requires appropriate personal protective equipment to avoid exposure to dust or fumes.
